“To discover what we ought to strive for and work out how we can best achieve it is, in a nutshell, the essence of statesmanship.”

~ Joshua Kieffer

A high school friend told me about Hillsdale, its principled stand on federal financing, and his intention to attend (he was a year ahead of me). I was immediately entranced. The Van Andel Graduate School of Statesmanship begins with the idea that absolute truth exists and can be known (albeit imperfectly). This is no less true of political truth than of scientific truth or moral truth. Hence, we can observe what is true of politics, discover what we ought to strive for, and work out how we can best achieve it. That, in a nutshell, is the essence of statesmanship.
